Why doesn't Metapod evolve into Venomoth and Venonat into Butterfree

according to the pic, venonat's and butterfree look similar to each other, as does metapod and venomoth, so why didn't venonat evolve into butterfree and metapod into venomoth?

Idk possibley thats what they were originally going to do.

maybe they were considering it but they didn't do it in the end, then it might have something to do with their stats

Cocoon become moths in real life so it would make sense for the cocoon pokemon metapod to evolve into venomoth. like silver mentioned it probably does have to do with the stats or they just wanted to mess with us for some reason.

venomoths stats are higher than butterfree's but then again venonat's stats are higher than metapods

Venonat looks so much like Butterfree.

Well caterpillars go into cucoons too and comes out as a butterfly so it does make sense XP

then again, caterpillars go into cocoons and grow into moths so i guess either could've happened

In real life caterpillars that form chrysalis become butterflies and caterpillars that form cocoons become moths.metapod is a cocoon pokemon so in theory it should evolve into a moth pokemon.we'll probably never know if metapod was intended to evolve into metapod or venonat into butterfree.

well actually, i dun think it matters, science normally isnt involved in this stuf....but one thing that threw me off was the color change
